Reaching El Faro can be a bit of a journey. The drive from Vallarta is 2+ hours followed by a hike of about the same each way
The hike is approximately 3.5 km, and just 400 meters from the lighthouse there is a very beautiful beach that is reached by a hike down the slope. You have to be careful if you want to get in to swim.
The trail has spectacular views of the ocean, and the lighthouse has been recently restored and freshly painted. The trail is well marked, but mainly made by livestock, with a few sketchy areas and potentially dangerous drop offs. Be sure to wear good footwear for walking, start the hike in the morning, and bring plenty of water and something to eat.
You can also reach El Faro by water taxi, traveling about 1 ½ hours from Vallarta, or travel by boat from Corrales to the beach and walk the 400 meters uphill to the lighthouse.
People have been known to make a fire, cook some food, then camp on the beach. The closest market is in El Tuito so be sure to go prepared.
